  • Greg Craven's Report

    The Pioneering Days in Australia.
    Timothy Craven, who was the son of Nicholas Craven and Mary Gooley, together with his wife Sabina O'Brien came out from Ireland in 1867.  They arrived in Port Phillip (later named Melbourne) aboard the Emerald Isle as assisted immigrants.  They married in around 1865 before coming to Australia .  It was recorded in the shipping records that both of them could read and write.  At first they rented a place in Britannia St, West Geelong.  Later they built and eventually owned several houses in that street.  Apparently they were all lived in by family members.

    Timothy Craven was actually christened Thady Creaven, according to the records of his second son's birth at Balrobuck in 1865.  He changed his name for some unknown reason :) because by the time he arrived in Australia he was certainly known as Timothy Craven.  Timothy and Sabina had the following children:

        • Jonathon Joseph Craven (b.1866)
        • Mary Craven (1869 - 1948)
        • Timothy Craven (1874 - 1956)
        • Thomas Francis Patrick Craven (1876 - 1951)
        • Sabina Josephine Craven (b.1883)
        • Bridget Craven (b.1881)
        • Nicholas Michael Craven (b.1883)
        • Catherine Craven

    Thomas (Harold) Craven, son of  Nicholas Michael Craven and Emma Gann,  played 90 games and kicked 17 goals for Geelong in the VFL between 1915 and 1924.  He was a solid fullback with good judgement and a fine kick.  He was appointed captain in 1921 and represented Victoria three times.  Harold died in 1971.

    Francis (John) Craven, son of Francis Nicholas Craven and Sylvia May Burke, was a sporting and football writer for the Melbourne Herald for many years.  He also wrote a couple of books about football.  One was called 'Football the Australian Way'. John died in 1977.  His ashes were scattered on the grave of his daughter Paula at Springvale Cemetery.  Paula had been tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident seven years earlier.

    John's son, Gregory Joseph Craven who is presently the Foundation Dean and Professor of Law at the Notre Dame University in Western Australia has also been the author of a number of publications.  These include, Secession (1986); The Convention Debates (1987); Australian Federation (1991);
