Greg Craven's Report
The Pioneering Days in Australia.
Timothy Craven, who was the son of
Nicholas Craven and Mary Gooley, together with his wife Sabina O'Brien came out from
Ireland in 1867. They arrived in Port Phillip (later named Melbourne) aboard the Emerald
Isle as assisted immigrants. They married in around 1865 before coming to
Australia . It was recorded in the shipping records that both of them could read and
write. At first they rented a place in Britannia St, West Geelong. Later they
built and eventually owned several houses in that street. Apparently they were all
lived in by family members.
Timothy Craven was actually
christened Thady Creaven, according to the records of his second son's birth at Balrobuck
in 1865. He changed his name for some unknown reason :) because by the time he
arrived in Australia he was certainly known as Timothy Craven. Timothy and Sabina
had the following children: Jonathon Joseph Craven
(b.1866)
Mary Craven (1869 - 1948)
Timothy Craven (1874 - 1956)
Thomas Francis Patrick Craven (1876 - 1951)
Sabina Josephine Craven (b.1883)
Bridget Craven (b.1881)
Nicholas Michael Craven (b.1883)
